17-1 Cloudy, Snow, Some Sleighing. I was at our own church morning, Evening. Frances there in the morning, at which time the Rev. Mr. Morgan Pres of the Western University preached and where the Rev. Mr. Sproul of the Phila preached in the Evening, Messrs. Strohm, McCulloh and Keating sat with me in my pew.

18-2 Cloudy, Snow, clear, Sleighing. Our Court commenced its regular term today. I was appointed by the court to prosecute for this term for James Tod the present Atty. Gen’l succeeding Geo. M. Dallas the S. Tod having thus far neglected to appoint a Depy. for this Co. Rec’d letter from Henry Schreiner Esqr. of this Co. no date by the hands of M. Stitzer accompanied by Wm. Nicole.

January 18, 1835 Monday

18-2 Cont’d I rec’d of the M. Stitzer present Wm. Nicole, Fee $5. I was at a very large Democratic meeting in favor of Van Buren and Johnson for the Presidency and Vice Presidency of the U.States, which was addressed by Geo. M. Dallas, Sam F. Reed of Phila and F. Johnson Esqr of this County and adjourned at about 9 P.M.

19-3 Clear, Cold, Some Sleighing. I was busy all day till 7 P.M. in Court. Then went in as a spectator 5 or 10 minutes to a "Harrison" meeting in the Court House where Gen’l Mark lately of the U.S. Senate from this State was eulogizing Harrison and abusing Martin Van Buren in a [shack]. I went to a large Gentleman’s Party at Shunks where Ex. Gov. Wold, Geo. M. Dallas and other distinguished citizens attended. Broke up at 10 P.M.

20-4 Clear, Cold, thawed some. I rec’d letter from Jas. Mehaffey "Marietta Jan. 18/36" I was engaged in court all day. Mrs. Wharton and Miss Harriet Grimshaw took tea at our house and they and Mary S. and Frances and self went to meeting at Lesson Room opened Rev. Mr. Sproul. Mr. Roberts of Phila formerly of H. of Rep. was at our house this Evening. I went home at 9 ½ P.M. with Mrs. Wharton and Miss H. Grimshaw.

21-5 Clear. Cold. Our sessions ended this morning. Grand jury were discharged Tuesday and all the traverse jurors except 12 yesterday. I wrote to Jas. Mehaffey in answer to his letter Rec’d yesterday. I was at the Capitol this morning in company with "Frances" and many ladies and gentleman witnessing an important debate relative to holding in custody for contempt of the House Ex. Gov. Wolf. G.M. Dallas and 20 or 22 more Free masons for a contempt. I was also there in the afternoon from 3 to 5 ½ P.M. where I saw conversed with the Rev. Mr. M. Coskrey and was a "Large Gentleman Party" at S.D. Pattersons Esqr. from 8 to 9 ½ P.M. might have been 100 to 150 gentleman there. I was introduced by Mr Oliphant to Mr. McClellan his Brotherinlaw of H. of Rep from Fayette Co. to Mr. Stevens of Phila and to others. Paid for [cigars] 6 ¼ cts. Ex. Gov. Wolf, G.M. Dallas and other distinguished men at Pattersons Party.

22-6 Clear and moderate. Thawing some. I was at the Capitol on same subject as Yesterday from 11 ½ A.M. to 1 P.M. this afternoon from 3 ½ to 5 ¼ P.M. Was at a Very Large Ladies and Gentlemans Party at Peacocks also "Frances" Ex. Gov. Wolf and Gov. Ritner were there to which latter gentleman I rec’d introduction by Mr. Middlesworth Speak of H. of Rep. I rec’d into also to Miss Howell and to Mrs. Horace Wolf, Sl. Haldeman, Mrs. Muhler and others. Col. Page and Williams were there and [Surrg.] We left at 10 ¼ P.M. I pd. for [cigars] 6 ¼

23-7 Clear and Cold. Shunk and self getting our offices papered today begun on the back Room. In Court this morning. Paid for 1 Qt. of Brandy at Firks, got by one girl [Kelly] and paid for by myself 25 cts. Paid for 1 Pair of gloves for self at [Ceuson Elders] 40 cts. I attended a theological lecture by a "Swedenborgian" in the Court House. Tolerably scientific Lec. I went after to my office and home at 9 P.M.
