Scope and Content

Includes correspondence from William C. Pelton, General Chairman of the Kipona in 1936, a printed program of the events scheduled with a detailed report of the activities for that year; sheet music for the song, "Ki-po-nah" composed by E. J. Decevee with words by Dr. Hugh Hamilton; newspaper clippings with the background information of the Kipona, 1910-1916; a postcard announcing the Kipona Artfest in 1997.

Background

The first annual Kipona celebration was held in September, 1916. There was a lapse of several years, but the annual Labor-Day celebration was revived in 1936 by river enthusiasts, owners of canoes and motorboats and others interested in commercial work on the Susquehanna. The "water carnival" continues today.
