Scope and Content

The collection consists of the diary of an unidentified woman in 1905. Published by the John Wanamaker Company, the volume includes a rendering of the Wanamaker Department Store in New York City along with 48 pages of information pertinent to life at the turn of the century. The seating arrangement for Philadelphia's Academy of Music, Garrick Theatre, Broad Street Theatre, and Eleventh Street Opera House are also provided. The daily entries reflect the life of a rather lonely schoolteacher with a passion for the theatre. Interspersed with her entries are newspaper clippings of theatre advertisements and reviews along with photos of celebrities of the time. The last 100 pages include advertisements for Philadelphia and New York business establishments selling tin wares, kitchen furnishings, gloves, shoes, linen underwear and brooms.
