Scope and Content

The collection contains a bound volume of handwritten sentiments and poetry belonging to Gertrude Speese, Harrisburg, 1891 with index and a small printed booklet of the "Story of Companies H, A and C, Third Pennsylvania Cavalry at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863," by Andrew J. Speese, 1906, with his account of the Third Pennsylvania Cavalry's participation in the battle with copies of the reports filed by Captain Miller of Company H, and his criticism of the published history of the unit. His story was addressed to Samuel W. Pennypacker, Governor of Pennsylvania and President of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The booklet contains the reply received from the Governor.


No evidence has been found to indicate Gertrude Speese and A. J. Speese were members of the same family.
