The collection contains a large bound ledger of accounts for the maintenance of inmates at the Harrisburg State Hospital in account with the County of Dauphin, 1915-1930; a speech by Dorothea Dix to the Legislature of Pennsylvania urging the establishment of a hospital for the insane, 1845; annual reports of the Trustees and Superintendent of the State Lunatic Hospital, 1852-1928; By-laws of the Hospital, 1851, 1867; reports of the Committee on Lunacy, 1894-95; May, 1985 issue of "The Bookmark," the newsletter of the State Hospital; advertisement for the Dorothea Dix Library and Museum with a short history and background material by Paul Beers, 1985; program for the dedication of a cemetery monument at the State Hospital, 1987; reprint of an article concerning the progress made in mental health, 1976; letters written by patients Sigmund Purist, 1865, and William Smith, c. 1866; seven large bound volumes of records of inmates at Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospitals covering the years 1910 to 1942; and two bound volumes of Order, Statement and Certificate of Physicians forms, undated.
