Scope and Content

The complete collection contains postcards, photographs, and archival materials. All materials are related to the Harrisburg/Dauphin County area and cover subjects as Harrisburg and local towns, the Capitol, buildings, businesses, parks, streets, bridges, churches, hotels, fire companies, hospitals, monuments, theaters, schools, railroad, civic organizations, etc. and provide an architectural history of Harrisburg and the surrounding area.

The postcards and photographs are located in the Photo Archives. The archival materials have been separated according to subject; most items are clippings taken from local newspapers and other publications. Very few of the materials are original in nature.

Background

J. Calvin Neill was a prominent businessman and community figure from the Harrisburg area. He was the owner of the Neill Funeral Home in Paxtang, served as mayor of Paxtang from 1973 to 1985, a member of the Dauphin County Republican Committee, Paxtang GOP committeeman, borough judge of elections for 25 years, Paxtang Fire Company president for 12 years and Paxtang PTA president, as well as active in the Elks, Lion Club, and the American Legion.
