Contains four song books compiled by J. H. Kurzenknabe and published by J. H. Kurzenknabe & Sons: "Song Treasury," 1888; "Sowing and Reaping," 1889; "Gospel Trio of Sacred Songs for Sunday Schools," 1895; and "Kindly Light," 1896.

Background

J. H. Kurzenknabe, music teacher and author, was born in Germany in 1840, and set out for America at the age of fourteen. He attended a seminary in Pennsylvania and studied music with William Bradbury, a prominent teacher of music. He later taught music in Maryland, New England, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and other states in the east. He settled in Harrisburg some time in the late 1800's. He married Susan Shafer in 1859 and they had seventeen children.
