The Jones House on the southeast corner of Market Square was also known as Washington House and Union Hotel. Rawn mentions all three names. It was later the Commonwealth Hotel. At least three famous guests supposedly set foot here. General George Washington was a guest on October 3, 1794 on his way to the Whiskey Rebellion. In 1859 King Edward of England, then the Price of Wales, was entertained here. And Abraham Lincoln stopped during his 1861 trip to Washington to be inaugurated. 1860s.
