Scope and Content

Collection consists of the original handwritten constitution drawn up February 28, 1829, and printed booklets of the "Constitution and By-Laws of the Harrisburg Beneficial Society," 1829, 1834, 1837, 1853, and 1868. Included in each booklet is the list of officers and members of the Society for that year.

Background

The Harrisburg Beneficial Society was formed in February, 1829, to provide assistance and support of the members and their families in times of misfortune, occasioned by sickness, accident or death. Citizenship in the United States and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was required for membership and a member had to be between the age of twenty-one and fifty. No soldier or seamen was eligible for membership. The Society was incorporated in 1830 and the By-Laws were amended in April, 1834.
