The collection contains the papers of Thomas C. Reed who was a toll collector for the Pennsylvania Canal. The papers include certificates of appointment as Justice of the Peace of Cumberland and Franklin Townships in 1824; a bond issued by the Pennsylvania Canal Commissioners after his appointment as toll collector at Middletown, 1829; a certificate from the Harrisburg Election Judges stating he was elected Chief Burgess of Harrisburg, 1851; correspondence from Daniel Sturgeon and F. R. Shunk of the Pennsylvania Canal Commission concerning duties, regulations, salary; a printed circular containing instructions for toll collectors relative to clearing and registering boats, with a form of a quarterly account current; receipts for money deposited to the credit of the Penna.
