Scope and Content

The collection contains fourteen letters of regret concerning the invitation to attend the anniversary celebration of the January 8th victory at New Orleans by General Jackson to be held by the Democratic citizens of Harrisburg in January, 1842. The letters were written to Jacob Sallade by notable men of the government, such as James Buchanan, Martin Van Buren, Daniel Sturgeon, and others. The collection also contains a memo written by the Rev. Edward W. Hutton, undated.
