Scope and Content

The collection contains primarily the business papers of Jackson Herr Boyd who served as executor for the estates of many of his relatives.

Contains correspondence of John Y. Boyd, 1913; correspondence of Jackson Herr Boyd from 1912 to 1955; correspondence of James Boyd (1888-1944) from his publishers, 1936, 1939; correspondence of Alexander Boyd, 1952-53, 1955; and bank statements and checks of C. Sylvester Jackson.

Three photographs have been added to the collection - tin type showing James Boyd as a young boy and Jackson Boyd as a baby with nurse; Mary Boyd McCormick, sister of John Y. Boyd; and Eleanor Herr, wife of John Y. Boyd.

A scrapbook of photos kept by Jackson Herr Boyd's wife before they were married, "former boy friends," 1910-1914, has also been added to the collection.

Background

Jackson Herr Boyd, son of John Y. Boyd and Eleanor Gilmore Herr Boyd, grandson of James Boyd and his wife Louisa Y. Boyd was born in 1892. He attended the Harrisburg Academy and graduated from Princeton University in 1914. He was an Army veteran of World War I and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. After his discharge from military service, he returned home and resumed his activities in connection with the Boyd estate and interests in the Harrisburg area. He was a director of the Dauphin Deposit Trust Co., Elk River Coal and Lumber Co., and a chairman of the board of Union Deposit Corp. He had an office in the Telegraph Building, Harrisburg and a home in North Carolina, where he spent a great deal of time in later years. He died in 1983 at the age of 91. Helen Boyd Dull and Mary Boyd McCormick were sisters of his father, John Y. Boyd.
