Scope and Content

The collection contains two printed copies of the Charter and By-Laws of the Harrisburg Building Association with a copy of the seal. The Association was chartered on November 23, 1855. The booklet includes handwritten notes in the margins and list the names of committee members on the back cover.

Background

The Harrisburg Building Association was chartered in November, 1855. The object of the corporation was the accumulation of a fund from contributions, fines, interest and profits on investments, for the purchase of land and tenements, and the erection of buildings, and the dividing of said lands, tenements, building or money for the use and benefit of the members at such time the corporation may determine. The stockholders were citizens of the age of twenty-one or more. The office of the Association was on Third Street, near Market.
