Scope and Content

The collection contains an engraved leather-bound program for a dinner given by the members of the Bar of Dauphin County to the Honourable John B. McPherson on March 30, 1899. In addition to the menu, it provides a short biography of Mr. McPherson with photo, the program of speakers, the participants, and the committee members.

The collection also includes a certificate from the Dauphin County Centennial granting him a commission as a member of the Commemorative Medal Committee of the Centennial, June 10, 1885.

Background

John B. McPherson was born in Harrisburg in 1846; he graduated from Princeton University in 1866 and was admitted to the Bar of Dauphin County in 1870. He was elected District Attorney of Dauphin County in 1874 and subsequently elected without opposition to the position of Additional Law Judge of the Twelfth Judicial District. In 1899 he was appointed by President McKinley United State Judge for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
