Scope and Content

A diary of the Civil War kept by Alexander Bergstresser from April, 1864 to April, 1865. Includes lists of letters sent, clothing drawn from the government, letters received, date of receipt of misc. articles, an incomplete listing of killed and wounded, listing of initials and figures, and numerical additions.

Background

Alexander Bergstresser enlisted in company C, 79th Pennsylvania Volunteers in July, 1863, and was detailed as a musician. He served until September, 1864 when he was discharged as a private at Jonesboro, Georgia. He re-enlisted as a musician in the band of the Third Brigade, First Division, 14th Army Corps and served until the close of the war. He also served as chief clerk of the quartermaster's department of the Third Brigade. He was married to Anna Elizabeth Sach in 1857 in Harrisburg.
