Scope and Content

Consists of the account book of the Water Company kept by the treasurer, George W. Harris, from December, 1835 to September, 1839, with the minutes of the proceedings of the company from June, 1835 to July, 1839, with the signatures of William Graydon, who was appointed chairman in 1835, and John Berryhill who was elected president. Includes notes of accounting transactions, a list of outstanding debts, and a notice for the election of president and six managers by the order of the board and signed by Geo. W. Harris, May, 1838.

Background

The original act for the incorporation of the Harrisburg Water Company was passed February 14, 1833, with a limit of five years. Subsequent supplements passed in 1834 and 1836 extended the charter two years to February 14, 1840. A section of the original act specified the election of a president and six managers be held annually on the first Monday of May.
