Scope and Content

Collection contains correspondence to Jasper Yeates, Attorney, from his clients, 1741-1794, several letters addressed to Miss Catherine Yeates, 1830-1835, and a letter from London addressed to Jasper Yeates Conyngham, 1875.

Background

Jasper Yeates, b. 1745, d. 1817, was one of the most eminent lawyers of his day. He was admitted to the bar in 1765. He took an active part in the Revolution and was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court in 1791. He married Sarah Burd of Lancaster in 1767. Ten children were born to Jasper and Sarah Yeates, one of which was Catharine, born 1783, died 1866. Another daughter, Elizabeth, married Redmond Conyngham in 1808.
