Scope and Content

The collection contains a scrapbook of articles concerning the death of Bishop William Perry Eveland, a missionary of the Methodist church in the Philippines in 1916. The materials include newspaper clippings, religious periodical articles, correspondence, and programs. The newspaper clippings detail his unexpected death while on a fishing trip in Carlisle and the articles provide biographical information on his life. Includes, also, an editorial written by Bishop Eveland and an introduction written by Bishop Eveland in Manila in 1915 to a book to be published by a friend.

Background

William Perry Eveland was born in Harrisburg in 1864 and graduated from Dickinson College in 1892. He served the Methodist church in various positions and in 1912 he was elected missionary bishop of Southern Asia. He died in a tragic accident while fishing near Mount Holly Springs in July, 1916.
