Scope and Content

The collection contains papers concerning General Joseph F. Knipe, the Savior of Harrisburg, and include the program of the Dedication of the plaque placed on the home of General Knipe at 329 S. Front Street, Harrisburg, on October 16, 1954 (2 copies); a five-page typewritten tribute to General Knipe by Colonel Henry W. Shoemaker, former chairman of the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, 1954 (2 copies); a photo of the descendants of General Knipe with Colonel Shoemaker, 1954; a newspaper clipping from The Evening News of June 21, 1963, describing the events of June, 1863, when General Knipe was chosen to command the troops and volunteer forces for the defense of the city of Harrisburg against the advancing Confederate army.
