Scope and Content

The collection contains two publications concerning the Governor's Troop.

"History of the Governor's Troop Pennsylvania Cavalry United States Volunteers Spanish-American War, 1898," was published by the Governor's Troop Veteran Association in 1931 and provides a detailed history of the troop with photographs.

The second publication is the program for the 50th Anniversary Banquet and Military Ball held at the Hotel Penn-Harris in Harrisburg, February, 1938 (2 copies).

Background

The Governor's Troop was organized in 1888 as the Governor's escort. The Troop went into Federal Service as part of the Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry in the War with Spain, 1897-98. It reported for duty at the Mexican Border in 1916-17, and mustered in Federal Service for the World War in 1917. It was reorganized after the war in 1920 and became Troop C, 104th Cavalry, 52nd Brigade. The Troop participated in several anniversary celebrations and escorted Governor Pinchot, President Hoover, the King and Queen of Belgium, Ex-President Roosevelt, Marshall Foch, General Pershing, Rear Admiral Byrd and others.
