Scope and Content

The collection contains a cancelled one thousand dollar bond of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, which was paid with the donations made to the Foundation through the Hon. John S. Fisher, Governor of Pennsylvania, February 19, 1929. A memorandum of explanation from A. Boyd Hamilton is included with the bond.


The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, Inc. was established to raise funds to clear off the debt and preserve Monticello. Through the efforts of the Hon. John S. Fisher, Governor of Pennsylvania, $25,000 was raised in the Commonwealth. After the bonds were paid and cancelled, it was requested by persons interested in the project that the Governor distribute the cancelled bonds among Historical Societies of Pennsylvania.
