Scope and Content

The collection contains primarily papers of George Z. Gray's long career and interest in railroading. The papers include correspondence, certificates awarded to him, membership cards in various railroad organizations, newspaper clippings, a booklet published in 1927 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Broadway Limited, and a booklet with the history and by-laws of the Cemetery Association of Harrisburg, 1856.

Contains photos of engines of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad.


George Z. Gray began his career with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1897. He served in various capacities, notably as a fireman instructor, road foreman, and a trainer of steam locomotive engineers in making the transition to running the newer types of power. He retired in 1948 after 50 years of service and celebrated his 100th birthday in May, 1978.
