Scope and Content

The collection contains a scrapbook of news clippings about the campaign and election of Ruth Wills Miller to the Harrisburg School Board in November, 1935, and clippings and photos of the school board activities from 1935 to 1943. It includes also her petition to have her name entered on the ballot, several certificates and a copy of the oath of office for school director.

Background

Mrs. Ruth W. Miller announced her candidacy for school director in August, 1935 and was elected to the office on the Republican ticket in November of that same year. She was a sister of John Y. Mills, chairman of the Young Republicans of Pennsylvania and wife of Evan J. Miller, a widely known city realtor. She was a graduate of Wells College and taught school in New York before her marriage. She served as Republican State Committeewoman from Perry County, a member of the College Club of Harrisburg, a member of the Market Square Presbyterian church, and a director of the Children's Home. She served as school director on the Harrisburg School Board from her election in 1935 to her resignation in December, 1943.
