Scope and Content

Consists of the booklets of the Proceedings of the Dauphin County Bible Society for 1857, 1863-1869, with the constitution and by-laws of the organization. Includes the annual reports of the Bible Societies from Harrisburg, Middletown, Paxton, Armstrong Union, Wiconisco, Dauphin, Berrysburg, Millersburg, Uniontown, Halifax, Coxestown, Hummelstown, Linglestown, East Hanover Union, and others societies which were formed through the years.

Background

In 1851 the Harrisburg Bible Society was desirous of developing an interest in the Bible throughout the region and sent out committees of clergymen to visit various places to encourage the formation of Bible societies. Consequently, twelve societies were formed and in January, 1852, delegates from a number of these societies assembled in Harrisburg and organized the Dauphin County Bible Society.
