A booklet, "History and Organization of the Harrisburg Car Manufacturing Co." by William T. Hildrup, treasurer and general manager, 1890, provides a detailed record of the company from its conception in 1853 to 1890, including the names of its officers and directors, descriptions and drawings of the buildings, and financial statements.

Background

The Harrisburg Car Manufacturing Company on Herr Street next to the canal was organized in the summer of 1853 by a group of Harrisburg businessmen with a capital stock of twenty-five thousand dollars. It was incorporated under the general manufacturing laws of the state in February, 1863 with capital of seventy-five thousand dollars. The company was engaged in the building of railroad cars and was a successful enterprise for many years.
