![]() Harrisburg's First Automobile This Waverly Electric automobile was owned by Harry C. Dodge, a Hatter and Furrier at 19 N. Third Street who lived during the turn of the century. The caption attached to the photo reads as follows: "Harry Dodge in Harrisburg's 1st automobile, a Waverly electric. The car cost $2,500 and was of the convertible type that could be used for 2 or 4 passengers, and by removing the detachable seat in the rear and adjusting the delivery top, the car became serviceable for commercial purposes. It had wire wheels and solid rubber tires and a frame of hollow tubing like bicycle construction. It would do very well if it covered twelve miles. The storage battery alone weighed 900 lbs. and was charged from the city wires at 124 Strawberry St." Photo ID: B00077. |
