![]() Running Pump Tavern The Running Pump Tavern was a log house built about 1741 one-eighth mile north of Linglestown. According to a 1903 account by Nevin Moyer, the deed to the land was executed to Andrew Berryhill in 1765 by Thomas and John Penn, the area originally being known as Mount Hill. The home once had a large stone kitchen attached that was torn down around 1850. The first floor had a large hall leading to two stairways, one to the second floor and one to the cellar. There was also a secret entrance to a four foot square room called the "Indian Cellar," which was used as a hiding place for whites. At the time of Moyer's account, he claims the pump had been running for over 100 years. The pipes that ran from the elevated spring to the pump were made of pine, eight to twelve inches in diameter and 15-20 feet long. Photo ID: D03362. |
