![]() Silk Mill Standpipe Rubble A crowd of people stands on the rubble of what used to be the standpipe at the Harrisburg Silk Mill on the corner of Front and North Streets. The building was originally built about 1852 as a cotton mill but was leased in 1888 to Pelgran & Meyer who converted it into a silk mill. It operated as such into the 1920s when it was then closed and demolished. Explosives were used to bring down the standpipe, and before the rubble was cleared, lumber was already on site for the construction of the YMCA. Photo ID: MG698-1471. |
